Abstract

Sudha Murty's book "Gently Falls the Bakula" intricately examines the themes of femininity and matrimony through the story of Shrimati, the main character. The book examines the complexities of gender roles, societal expectations, and personal goals within the framework of Indian culture. A bright and driven young woman, Shrimati is enmeshed in the complications of her marriage to her college sweetheart, Shrikant. Shrimati demonstrates the stereotypical role of a loyal wife by sacrificing her personal goals to support Shrikant, who prioritizes his career advancement over their relationship. Through her experiences, Murty sheds light on the difficulties that many women encounter while attempting to strike a balance within the parameters of marriage between their own needs and those of society.  This summary aims to provide perspectives on Murty's exploration of femininity and marriage in "Gently Falls the Bakula," emphasizing the protagonist's challenges, sacrifices, and ultimately, her drive for self-discovery and empowerment.
