"Harmonizing Rural Communities: Conflict Resolution and Peace-building through the Lens of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam"

Abstract

This paper explores the potential of integrating the ancient Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family — into conflict resolution and peace-building strategies within rural governance frameworks. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by rural communities, including resource disputes, cultural and ethnic tensions, and governance issues, this study seeks to understand how the universal values embodied by Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam can foster a more inclusive, compassionate, and sustainable approach to governance. Through a comprehensive literature review and analysis of case studies where principles akin to Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam have been applied, the paper examines the effectiveness of these strategies in reducing conflict, promoting social cohesion, and building resilient, peaceful communities. Methodologically, the paper adopts a qualitative approach, drawing on examples from various geopolitical contexts to illustrate the universality and applicability of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam in rural settings. The findings suggest that incorporating this philosophy into rural governance not only aids in conflict resolution but also enhances community well-being and environmental stewardship, offering a holistic model for rural development.
