Abstract

A significant amount of Indian households' out-of-pocket (OOP) expenses are related to medications. The Indian government launched the Jan Aushadhi (Medicine for the Masses) Scheme (JAS) to solve this problem by giving patients access to affordable generic medications. These medications are supplied by the nationwide network of Jan Aushadhi outlets. In the first seven months of the fiscal year 2020–21 (up until October 31), PMBJP sold pharmaceutical products through 6600 Janaushadhi Kendras for Rs. 358 crores. For the whole year, sales are probably going to exceed Rs. 600 crore.  The sales amount increased from Rs. 7.29 crore in 2014–15 to Rs. 433 crore in 2019–20. From just 99 locations in 2014–15 to almost 6600 locations in 2019–20, Janaushadhi Kendras has expanded.
